Fuerteventura Canary Islands

Fuerteventura is the longest island in the archipelago of Canary Islands. Next to Tenerife, it is the second biggest island. Beaches of more than 50 kilometers of stunning golden and white sand are the most pride of the island. Apart from the beaches, the tourism in the island had become a recent phenomenon because of its well-developed infrastructure with various marine excursions, a water park, a zoo, and golf courses. For those who are looking for something fancy, the island offers many outdoor activities such as diving, big game fishing, kite surfing, windsurfing, and surfing.

There are many high mountains on the island of Fuerteventura, but the highest one is the Mount Jandia, which is located at the southwestern part. The island has two divisions, the southwestern portion called the Jandia Peninsula, and the northern portion known as the Maxorata.

Maho refers to the people living in the island of Fuerteventura. This term was derived from the word “Mahorero”, who said to be the first settlers of the island that arrived from North Africa. The Mahorero term comes from the ancient word of “mahos”, which refers to the kind of goatskin shoe being worn by the original settlers.

In 1927 together with Lanzarote, the island of Fuerteventura became a part of the Gran Canaria province. In 1940, an airport was built in the island that is just west of the Puerto Del Rosario along the Tindaya Road, which is still seen today. However, because of the island’s proximity to Africa, many banned African immigrants tried to enter through the island via boat trip from Morocco. Their goal is to enter the European Union.

FuerteventuraThe island of Fuerteventura has an area of 1,660 square kilometers, length of 100 kilometers, and width of 31 kilometers. This island is regarded as the oldest island in the Canary Islands with an age of more than 20 million years. It had been existing since the time of volcanic eruption at the Canary hotspot. Most of the areas in the island were created way back 5 million years ago. However, over the centuries, the areas were eroded by the weather and winds. In addition, the last volcanic activity in the island happened 4,000-5,000 years ago.

The island of Fuerteventura has a near perfect climate of average temperature between the months of January and August every year. In addition, all throughout the year, the climate in the island is pleasant. Because of the constant winds blowing and large waves in the island, it had become a paradise for windsurfing and surfing for sports enthusiasts.

As mentioned in the first paragraph, tourism in the island of Fuerteventura had become a recent phenomenon. Because of this, the main source of economy and livelihood in the island is based on tourism. This is apart from the various existing industries in the island such as agriculture and fishing. The primary source of tourism in the island is the towns surrounding the Corralejo in the north, and Jandia’s Morro Jable. The Majorero cheese is a locally made product in the island from the milk of a native majorera goat that attracts tourism as well.

After the construction of airport in the island of Fuerteventura in 1940, it was followed with the building of the first tourist hotel in 1965. The hotel had given the island a new era, making it one of the main European holiday destinations.
